Lyndsay let go of her crippling fear of spiders
Lyndsay decided to go Beyond the Mask coming towards the end of 2015 with a desire and urge to revamp her energy, activeness and happiness. Lyndsay was by no means unhappy, but she did have a thought she could be doing more within her life. Married with a young son, a husband who runs his own business, in a job that really gave her a huge amount of satisfaction and everything appeared to be going ok. There was nothing she was doing that was having a negative impact on her life except for one thought. She wanted to do a little more in her life and had a feeling that suggested there was a little more to discover.
By the third session Lyndsay had dealt with a number of self-limiting beliefs and she had already started to see incredible differences in the way that she saw herself in the world she lived and how she had started to do the things she had wanted to do for a long time but never thought she could. Within this session we discussed an issue that many people have, Lyndsay had a severe phobia of spiders. As she explained, her reaction to even the thought of spiders sent a shivers down her spine was a self-declared screamer. No matter who was there or where she was, if by some chance a spider was to present itself into Lyndsay’s vision her reaction was always the same, scream and run or on occasion, have a full panic attack.
She hated spiders and the thought of them or the sight of them just sent Lyndsay into a state of retreat. I asked Lyndsay quite simply whether she wants to deal with this right now and get rid of this self-limiting belief and of course she said “yes”.
10 minutes later Lyndsay’s phobia of spiders had already been challenged and although breathing very deeply and visibly shaking, Lyndsay agreed to hold a spider.
Coincidentally a few days prior to this I found quite a large spider that had died in my office so I kept it as I thought it would come in handy one day. I explained that she was in complete control and was under no pressure to do anything she didn’t feel she could do. At this point Lyndsay’ s husband had arrived and couldn’t quite believe his eyes, Lyndsay and spiders are two words that would have never gone into a sentence never mind in the same room but here he was watching his screamer of a wife hold a spider. Yes the spider was dead but this was just the beginning of the story.
Within a matter of a few weeks Lyndsay had decided to really challenge this new way of dealing with how she thought and how she felt about things and set a goal to hold the biggest spider she could find and not feel anything other than calmness. I have to say the final spider she held was absolutely huge and she was amazingly calm.
This is what Lyndsay had to say about the whole journey:
When I first met with Nigel, he inspired me to want to do more with my life. I had everything I wanted. A wonderful husband who I had been with since school, a son who we had wanted for many years and who fills me with pride every day and a job that I had been in for 14 years but that I still loved. I still looked forward to Mondays, which I realised was rare! However, one thing was missing….my get up and go had got up and left!
I ate badly, never exercised and didn’t look after myself. My energy levels were low and although there was so much I wanted to do, I didn’t have the energy at the end of the day to do anything.
I embarked upon the Beyond the Mask process. Nigel was a tough cookie and challenged me on the way I thought about things. At the beginning of the process, he told me about 2 rules. 1 – That I would never lie to him and 2 – that I’m not allowed to say “I don’t know” This forced me to think hard about my responses and to be honest about what’s coming out of my mouth, no matter how hard it was to hear or say. It was an emotional time and challenged some long held beliefs that weren’t reality. This process had what I call an unexpected “side effect”. In dealing with the way I saw myself and the self-limiting beliefs that I had, I realised that I could do anything that I wanted to.
On that fateful day, when Nigel asked me if I wanted to deal with my severe phobia, I felt empowered enough to say “yes”. So, there was Nigel sat in front of me, about 3 feet away holding out a massive dead spider. He told me that I didn’t have to do anything and that I was in control. I felt scared but I knew I could do it. I asked him to put the spider in my hand, which I think surprised Nigel! Just at this exact point, my husband Paul walked in and saw Nigel put the spider in my hand. None of us could believe it! I had made a huge step forward and I was in shock. It felt incredible to let go of this crippling fear that I’d had for so long. I cried tears of happiness.
In the weeks that followed, I kept imagining myself holding a spider. I went out of my way to look for one, but sods law was I couldn’t find one! I decided to raise money for a charity close to my heart, MNDA – Motor Neurone Disease Association. My father in law has MND and also has a severe phobia of spiders so I decided to hold a tarantula for charity! It seemed perfect.
The event was held in December 2015, where I raised over £500 for my charity. And the best bit? I held and allowed to walk around on my arm, a Goliath Bird Eating Tarantula!! I cried when I held it the first time. All of my fears melted away and I enjoyed holding it. I held it again after that!
